What will happen if i dye my dark dark brown hair a medium ash brown?

Ok here's the whoooole story:

I have naturally dark dark darrrrk brown hair almost black.

Under the direction of my aunt I used a box of dark golden blonde on my hair hoping to make the color of my hair turn a nice chestnut brown.

DID NOT HAPPEN!

My roots ended up being more red and the rest of my hair pretty much stayed the same, maybe a little more of a regular brown instead of my natural much darker brown.

i was PETRIFIED!

So now here I am, and i just bought 2 boxes [very long hair! ;)] of clairol's perfect 10 medium ash brown. i did this because i have heard endlessly that ash gets rid of the red tones in hair so i thought i'd give it a try. but i've also heard ash makes your hair green?

please help me out, i'd really like to hear some advice from those who have experience with this kind of thing.

thanks!

Hello, It wont make your hair green unless your dying it one after another after another. Ash brown has red tints in it so i dont see why it would take the red out but it might help. Ash brown always has a really nice shine to it also. Try it:)

The only area you should be putting the ash based color on is the root area. They ended up more red because the developer in the color (which more than likely was 20 volume) works faster and lifts more color out at the roots because of the body heat from your scalp. My advice would be at this point is to make an appointment for a free consultation with a professional. You are playing with fire doing this on your long hair yourself. It could end up costing you hundreds of dollars to correct what you mess up because hair coloring is a chemical process and if you don't understand what the chemicals do, the Theory of Color, proper application, strengths of developers to get the desired results, you should not be doing this yourself.

I just read the answer above. It is wrong. Ash base colors contain no red pigment. They are blue/green bases and are used to counteract undesired red. Ash based colors only turn blond hair green because blond has no red in it. This is what I mean about not understanding the Theory of Color, etc.

If you have reeeeally dark hair, you won't get much lightening effects from any hair dye, most likely you'll have to use a pre-lightning prodtuct first, before dying your hair the desired colour
