I dyed my hair at home and it came out more red than I wanted... how can I get rid of the red?

So even though I used a medium golden brown hair color kit on my hair it ended up coming out more of a dark brown/red color. I've done do-it-yourself kits before and the same thing happened--red-- so I'm not sure why I tried it again. I think my hair absorbs more color than most people's or something. ANYWAY... my question is: if I buy an ash brown color kit will it cancel out some or all of the red? What should I do to get the red out of my hair? Thanks in advance!!

Golden is the key work, your hair most likely had red tones in it already - and the goldne just brings it out more... this happened to me quite a few times. Ash typically has green in it to overpower the red and sometimes under the right lighting your hair will look green - the best thing to do is use is a color corrector - I have always used this little tube called Ardell Red Gold Color Corrector Plus, you just add it to your die and viola! I was also told by a beautician to use a neutral based color, no golden or ash, just neutral. A really good dye to use also is Ion Color Brilliance Permanent Liquid Hair Color , you just buy the developer then add the color corrector [whole tube] and your all set. Hope this helps :]

Oh and btw - you can get all of this at the local beauty store, like Sally's Beauty Supply or buy it online at their site.

Part of the problem may have to deal with how long you allow the dye to sit in your hair. Next time snip a small piece from underneath (where the cut would be hidden) and test the dye on it to see how long to use it. The longer you leave the dye in, the darker it will be. For now, wash your hair several times in a row and it will lighten somewhat.

. The particles in red dye are too large too actually penetrate the hair shaft, unlike other colours. However, for this reason, they lay on top of the hair shaft instead, which is why you are noticing it more. Red, its a tricky colour, being the hardest to keep and hardest to get rid off for those reasons. What is likely happening is that what little red is in that colour is attracting itself to what red occurs in your hair naturally. I would wait it out and if it doesn't end up the colour you want in a few washes, adding an ash colour to your will help. If you really are having trouble getting the right shade, see a salon. It would be worth the money to have the colour you want. You can also try mixing two shades. PS if you dye your hair frequently, than you are absorbing more colour because dryer hair will do that.

Before you go out buying and experimenting with your hair try this simple step...

get your normal Shampoo ( about twice the amount you would normally use in a wash) and to that mix in 1 teaspoon of Bi-Carb soda and wash your hair, lather and leaving in for about 3-5 minutes. you should be able to see your hair dissolving the red or lightening the colour and know when to wash it out. however you can repeat this process until your happy with the colour over the next couple of washes, it doesn't harm the hair and its cheap. good luck.

Yes. Use an ash color in the same level your trying to achieve. Obviously you have dark hair and your lightening it a little. What you really need is a "green based" ash color. Sounds scary i know. But if you have no blond in your hair....your safe.

go to a salon.!...... or the simple fix is to put an ash brown over the top, on the roots first as they will be the reddest 15mins then midlenths10mins then ends 5mins.

if you go strait through you will go muddy on the mid lengths and ends.

only in extreme cases i would strip colour first. as this can be a can of worms and you will still have to recolour the hair and it will look worse.

remember if you put an ash brown on top it will look darker as well as less red. good luck. ......................salon owner

You could try using a darker brown, or basicly if iwas you i wouldnt waste youre money, and go to the hairdressers and get them to do it properly, i used to dye my own hair right up until about last year and i decided to go to the hairdressers and after that i never do my own hair again, if you find a good one they will listen to what you say and do what you want. Stop using these home dyes they are so unpredictable, plus if you go to the hairdressers and you don't like it, they will usually re-do it for nothing!!

Go to your hairdresser. I did the same thing last year only my hair was blonde. I trained as a hairdresser so should have known better. It took me almost a year to get out the red dye. It will have to be stripped by your hairdresser if you want to get the colour out.

Dont try stripping the colour out yourself tho, you could do more damage to your hair.

Mine always does that if I dye it at home. Not sure why it just tends to go ginger ish instead of blonde.

I'm a hairdresser i know it can be expensive going to hair salons but diy jobs on hair is a big NO sometimes the colour is ok but your damaging the hair coz the products are to strong. your hair is to red so you need a flat colour put on top like a more ash brown but the best thing to do is to let is wash out the go to a salon in a couple of weeks
