I've done this to my hair many times. I'm actually known with my friends as having my "many phases" of hair color and cuts...always dark, then light...long then short. My suggestion would be, if you want to save money and not have it done professionally, try to find a Sally's Beauty Supply located near you. They supply to professionals and us "normal" people without licenses. Their staff is well trained to help you find the right product to lighten your hair. You will probably have to bleach it, but you can use different "volumes" of developer to get it to the lightness you want. This is the best way, because by using a developer which is less strong, you won't fry your hair like everyone else is saying. Also, if you plan on dying it after bleaching it, give your hair a day to rest in between. So do this preferably on a weekend, or if you don't mind going outside with a little more "blonde" hair, then do it whenever. Giving it a day gives your hair time to rest from the first treatment and will make it soak up the dye better on the second day.

Follow all of the directions on the box! Even do the color strand test they say to. You want to make sure that you aren't allergic to the dye. Once you have done the "test", make sure you wear the plastic gloves they enclose. Mix the dye together like they tell you. Then make sure you coat all your hair so it doesn't come out streaky and set a timer for the amount of time they tell you to put it in your hair for.

Wait until the timer is up, get in the shower and get a little water in your hair and lather it up, dye and all. Let it sit for another minute and rinse it out completely until the water runs clear. Then use the conditioner that they give you and leave it in your hair longer than they suggest...about 5 minutes. Rinse it out.

Allow your hair to dry naturally instead of blow-drying...it will retain more shine that way.

Wash your hair,the next day,like you normally would and condition it with your normal conditioner, but again just like with the conditioner that came with the dye; leave it in for about 5 minutes.

Make sure you leave that conditioner in for at least three minutes every time you shampoo,for the next week and your hair will be soft and shiny just like it was before you dyed it.

A girl a Sally's adviced that I should use the # 40 creme developer with my favorite color. It's stronger than the #20. It works by removing the color while depositing the new one.I figured I had nothing to loose. I came out perfect. Light brown like caramel. By the way, the girl a the store was just shopping, she was not even professional.

The next time you color though, you need to go back to a #20, if not, it'll keep lightning.

You're really good looking. I think if you grew your hair long it would really suit you. You'd look great. I wouldn't bother with anything else, highlights or gel. Though highlights would be ok if you want to try them. Maybe try something non-permanent to see how it would look. But definitely grow your hair long. And I wouldn't straighten it either. It'll look nicer long when it's a bit wavy. Stick straight long hair isn't very nice.

Anyone who says long hair is a turn off doesn't know what they're talking about. At least try it.

Well, your hair is exactally like this friend of mine and he did this. It looks sexy!!!!!! So, as long as you do what he did, you'll look hotter than him!

Don't straighten it. .That'll only damage your hair. What you wanna do is wash it and comb it straight while blowdrying it. Your hair won't be completely straight but good, that looks fake.

Get highlights and lowlights. Your highlights should be dark blonde/light brown and light red. The lowloghts will turn out a little darker than your hair, but that's good because your roots will grow in nicely.

You don't want multi-colored hair when your roots grow in, do you?!

Do not grow it out much longer. If you do, then girls will be turned off. Keep it simple and it will look great!

hate to tell u but black, if he actually used a level 1 on your hair, isn't going to be pretty to lift. About a year and a half ago black underneath was HUGE around here and girls were doing it, well summer came and they wanted it out, well u don't get to pick what color u are when u remove black. The only way to pull color is with a lightening agent (bleach) thei pulls ALL pigment out of your hair, including your natural pigment, which means, depending on how light u want to go, your hair will go through hideous stages of reds, oranges, and then yellows (if you go that light) you will look tie dyed until they final filler and color are applied. Hopefully though this black you are seeing is only a level 3 or maybe even lighter which u may be able to just highlight an get a MUCH better look, but please please don't try doing it yourself, nothing that you buy over the counter is going to change the color of your hair, and if it does, i PROMISE you are NOT going to like what you se (refer back to my red nad orange comment)

it is not permanent but its really not healthy to put lemon juice and expose hair to the sun, it becomes weaker and breaks. The lemon juice acts as an acid to the hair and that doesnt sound too good. im sure it causes damage. If I were you I would enjoy it for a while and then have it cut to regain healthy stronger hair.

I used to dye my hair with Loreal Feria in Cardinal. I loved the color! It's a light auburn. However, I am a natural redhead and only used it because I had a bit of a highlight mishap.

Hi honey, you will need to strip your hair of its old colour first. I would totally and completely recommend going to a salon. Trying to re-dye your hair may have damaged it, or weakened it even if you can't tell. You at least need a consultancy. Otherwise, you can get home colour kits that include colour stripper, or they should sell it at Sephora or Sally's. You have to be really careful though.

Also, remember that after you strip your hair, you will need to condition it and let it calm down before dying it any colour. Colour stripping is not the same as bleaching, by the way, as a good product should contain no bleach. Another way to try it (and it's very risky) is to try to dye it blonde. At this point, it's worth knowing that Reddish hues take to the hair stronger than any other colour, so maybe a redder brown will help. but it will most certainly not cover up black. You will either have to have it stripped or go to a salon- sorry to break it to you ^_^

Hi. I was once a chronic hair-dyer like you, and one time I dyed my naturally-brown hair black. Thing that helped me was hair dye remover, which you can get in a box at Wal-mart just like the dye. It's in the dye section. It will lift out the black, and then you can put in the light brown color. It will work, but your hair will feel really dry for a while. I would recommend deep conditioning treatments a few times a month after all this and lay off the hair dye until new undamaged hair has had time to grow out. Good luck!

Shampoo cap---20volume peroxide and shampoo on the colored hair only(otherwise you will lighten the new growth) and that will only start to lift the permanent color off your hair...this is hard on your hair and you really should collect your moneys and get a bleach and tone and then invest in a toner for your shower...Black is bad and requires some sacrifices to make it right again. as someone who has worked at a salon for a loooooong time, and has many friends that are stylist let me give you some advice. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF.

Blasck is the on color that if you dye it yourself, you will never get it off in a healthy way. or in any way that will look good from home. You have saturated your hair follicle with black pigment, and that is really hard to fade out. specially if you die your hair alot, and your hair is already damaged. you don't want to perm it. That would be the worst thing you could do! you don't want to put straight bleach on it, because your hair might break apart! (trust me i have seen it)

I don't know what condition your hair is, but your best choice is too go to a any salon and go in for a free consultation. They will probably end up tellin you that you need a color correction. Ehich can take anywhere from an hour to 5, deoending on your hair length and texture, etc. The avarage cost of haveing your hair fixed is usually around $130. but the consultation is always free, and they can always recommenf something SAFE for your hair. I wouldn't try any home remedies anyone recommends here. Just see a Proffessional.

My natural color is a dark shade of blonde. I had light blonde highlights in it and my husband talked me into going darker ( I did this yesterday). Now I can't live with it. I went back to the salon and they said, unless I strip it (which they wouldn't suggest because it would ruin my hair), then I would have to wait a month for it to fade. Then they would see if they could match it to my natural color, which is about two shades different. I see movie stars do this stuff all the time. What do they do? Am I just going to the wrong place? You can't treat your hair once and then try to do it again the next day. It will ruin your hair. I would wait a month and then go to another salon and get it dyed back to medium blonde. After you get it dyed again your roots will start to come in as your natural color. You're probably not used to the new shade of brown...don't worry I'm sure it looks good.

I would wait about a week or two, well, as long as you can handle, and then go to another salon and ask them to change your color. Just find a pic, or a sample and take it to them. They will do it, and as long as your hair is not completley fried and a mess, you will be okay. Ive changed my hair hundreds of times. if ur hair was died 1x u do not need to have it stripped. Wash it with palmolive, it will take a few times. But it will lighten it a little bit. Then i suggest go to a place that know what they are talking abot and have them bring it to a nice nore natural color. If you are worried about dammage, buy a proten pack from the salon just cost 4 dollars and it will make youe hair so shiny/ healthy looking!

You can strip it, you just have to take REALLY good care of it afterwards. I promise you, I change my hair color more than anyone. I've done this non-stop for about 8 years. Strip your hair first (follow the directions in the box EXACTLY), color your hair the color you want it, and then condition, condition, condition. Use hot-oil treatments. Aussie 3 minute miracle works really well, or just plain ol' mayonaise at home. Also use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner everytime you wash your hair, and try to skip a day. Hope it works out!

You THINK you see movie stars doing this all the time but you don't really know the time span between the two pics you are looking at or how long it took to film the movie. Not to mention....are they wearing wigs...weaves. They have professional hairstylist on every set. The salon has your best interest in mind and they don't want to do something that is going to damage your hair. Stripping the color is extremely harsh on your hair and should only be done in drastic cases (like when it turns green) .A month isn't that long to endure darker hair. If you damage your hair going against their professional advice you could be looking at a year or two before your hair is back to normal. SO what is one month? During this month wash your hair as often as possible with dandruff shampoo.This will fade it quicker than anything. Then go back and let them match your natural color. Whatever you do ....don't try anything at home.

Yeah, it will start loosing some of the excess colorant during the next week. That will help some.

If your hair was in good condition when you colored it, and you don't have real long hair, you are safe to try this. Get some of that highlighter creme that is used for chunking or streaking. (One package does not make a lot, so if you have long hair it will not be enough) Put on the gloves and use your fingers to put it evenly through your hair. (You can leave the underside dark if you like that look) Comb it through...pay close attention to it as it will start counter acting that dark color immediately. You can see it changing. Try to just bring it up a shade, don't leave it on as long as the instructions say....maybe only 5 or 6 minutes. It has worked for me when I went too dark. My result was very good with it. It was not brassy or harsh looking, but shimmery with little sparks.

If you try to color again, it wouldn't do much at all. You can't really lighten hair over color. You would need to use a color remover first (You can find this at a beauty supply or pharmacy). You will be left with a reddish base color, and from there you will need to find the color you want. You will most likely need to use a high-lift color kit to achieve a medium blonde result. Remember to do your root area last, or you will be left with lighter hair on top!

So I'm stuck having to figure out a hairstyle that works for curly, puffy, thick hair. I've had long hair for most of my life so no suggestions less than two inches. A quick note is the last time it was medium length my hair decided to fight gravity and do the mushroom hairstyle until it grew longer. To reiterate because i know someone will miss the hint. I'd rather fight the stylist to the death than get a buzz cut of any sort.

They all have their pros and cons. Short hair can either be management free (aside from regular cuts) or take a lot of work to get it a certain way -- but really no more work than men's hairstyles. But it doesn't get in the way! The only really crappy thing is growing out short hair; it can look really bad and be hard to do anything with in the intermediate stages.

Medium hair and long hair can be pulled back out of the way and have more styling options, but length can make your hair really flat (if fine) or harder to brush or be frizzier (curls). But you can go longer between haircuts.

I personally loved having short hair and keep thinking about going back, but I don't have time for once a month haircuts.

I dont know your ethnicity but a lot of African American girls in Atlanta, where I live, get their hair braided upwards on the sides so it creates a mohawk of "free" hair in the middle... First before you dye your hair take the time to figure out if this is what you want to do ok. Some people take dyeing their hair to an extreme and this is not good because the more you dye your hair the more you can damage your hair. I would suggest using a temparary dye that will wash out in weeks to see if you like the color and how it looks on you. Some people look good with a certain hair color and it also depends on your skin type. Once you dye your hair from blonde to brown it would be hard on your hair to change it back once its permantently colored its hard to change. Not only that you have to consider if you use a permanent dye that you would have to touch up your roots as they grow out. Its recommended that you dye your hair only once a month. If you have brown eyes, no. It will wash you out. Blue or green eyes? Sure. (I didn't make that up, by the way) Be aware they grow out and need to be redone every 4-6 weeks- That's a lot of coin if you have other things that require money.

it really depends on the person. some people might prefer one or the other, and for some people it's either-or. i personally prefer medium long, but not too long. and don't shave your head! most girls don't like it. but shouldn't you be happy with it yourself in the first place? i think you should choose whatever you like the best, after all girls don't really date guys just based on hair -- personality counts a lot too!

All the ones I know have several hairstyle books and the stylist should help you decide and let you know if it will work for you. well, you could use shampoos that help give you straighter hair.. the purple one out of the sunsilk range is good

and theres some serums that help give you straighter hair, use some of that when your hairs a bit damp just before blowdrying.

and when your blowdrying your hair, do it in sections, and brush it downwards whilst drying.

i used to straighten my hair all the time, but i ruined it.. so now i avoid straighteners as often as possible

Why don't you go with the curls and increase them by adding some curling gel. I know what it is like to have hair that is almost crazy, just use what you got until you are allowed to do what you want. Also a real quick fix is a pony tail or semi bun

Well I'm sorry I don't have a picture to explain but depending on the length of your hair usually sporadic layers are good for curly hair to take the bulky look out and adding layers to your hair will surprisingly sometimes give you a style to work with. Side bangs are perfect for a high forehead and parting them from the arch in your eye brow over will conceal the forehead more. Oval shaped face people can have short hair it just takes someone that knows what short cut fits there features and with curly hair if the hair is really curly and it is just layered at the bottom and not throughout it can make the hair look wider and poofy which isn't probably what most people want! Hope this helps!

I have hair like you and I got it cut today and it looks really cute. I got it cut to shoulder length and side bangs. The side bangs will work but you have to straighten them almost every day, which is pretty easy, actually. Or you can keep them curly and clip them to side or something. They definetly work, just dont get them too short because it will look even shorter once they are curly again because curls make the hair sort of bounce up. I got mine to start from under the eye and then like layered side bangs to blend into my hair, really cute! And high foreheads are perfect for bangs! You should consider getting side bangs, it will look really cute! ;)

When I had LONG hair, some girls thought it was great, I never had a problem getting dates. When I was growing it out, like medium length, I was getting dates like crazy! -half up/half down

-soft curls

-totally straight

-add in some accessories i.e : head band, sparkly clip

-go curly or straight and clip your bangs to one side

-twist your bangs back in different sections

-wet your hair/have a shower, braid your whole head in different sections and in the morning take them out for a natural/cute n curly kinda look

if you have natually curly hair..play up the curls with some mousse and a diffuser or just let it air dry

if you have naturally straight hair use a bit of styling gel at the roots and blow-dry your hair up-side down for some volume

Hi I just went through this dilemma, .....I,m older as well and needed to update my look and wanting to keep my length,,, I have a round or square face......I had my hairdresser take 3 inches off the length, and do some light layering, and soft feathering around my face. I LOVE it.... Its still hitting my shoulders, but I'm able to clip it up still. If I go out I can use the curling iron on the layers which gives me volume, and a soft bounce to the hair. As well you can have a soft look around your face,,,,, by turning it under by a curling iron.
